A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s eastern coast triggered tsunami waves across the Pacific on Tuesday, prompting states of emergency, evacuations and widespread advisories.
Russian officials said the quake shook the Kamchatka Peninsula and the Kuril Islands, where several tsunami waves flooded the port city of Severo-Kurilsk and knocked out power. Waves there reached more than 19 feet, according to Russia’s Oceanography Institute. Four surges swept through the city, carrying fishing boats into the sea, though Mayor Alexander Ovsyannikov reported no major damage. In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the regional capital, a kindergarten under repair sustained damage.

Authorities reported minor injuries, most from residents rushing out of buildings. “All injured people are in satisfactory condition,” said Oleg Melnikov, head of Kamchatka’s regional health department.

The quake’s impact stretched across the Pacific. Hawaii issued a tsunami warning that was later downgraded to an advisory. Officials said waves up to three feet in amplitude were recorded, and residents had been urged to evacuate to higher ground. “Take Action NOW! Tsunami waves are currently impacting Hawaii,” the Honolulu Department of Emergency Management said on X.
On the U.S. West Coast, advisories remained in effect for Washington, Oregon, and California. The National Weather Service’s office in Eureka, Calif., confirmed wave activity of 3.6 feet in Crescent City, 3 feet in Arena Cove, and 1.2 feet in Humboldt Bay. Oregon officials warned that “dangerous currents and strong waves may pose a risk to those near the water,” urging people to avoid beaches and harbors until the advisory is lifted.
While emergency officials continue to monitor conditions, communities across Russia’s Far East, Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast are assessing the damage and awaiting an “all clear.”
