Day of Fire engages in a tasty sonic assault led by guitarist Joe Pangallo on its first studio release in three years, Losing All. Pangallo doesn’t skimp on the heavy crunch and sustain that drive hard music, but he seasons the aggressive mix with mature riffing that complements his powered sound.
The result is 13 numbers exploring the theme of “rebirth,” all delivered in high-energy fashion by Pangallo, drummer Zach Simms, bassist Chris Pangallo and vocalist Josh Brown.
Though standout tracks include “Landslide,” “When I See You,” and the lead-off song “Light ‘Em Up,” the rebirth angle of the CD gets especially real with “Cold Addiction,” a lyrical ode to the desperation of cocaine addiction. The topic is close to home for band founder Brown, whose own spiritual rebirth occurred in drug rehab, where he committed his life to God after surviving a heroin overdose.
Before that, he was signed to Island/Def Jam Records as the frontman for Full Devil Jacket. Despite the opportunities that once were afforded him in mainstream music, he describes Losing All as “without a doubt the best [album] I have ever been a part of.”
“I love this collection of songs because they are honest and creative,” he says.
The CD’s debut single, “Lately”—a jerky but driving, up-tempo head-slinger—has already charted and is available at iTunes music outlets in a bundle that includes a live audio version and live video.
Day of Fire’s self-titled debut CD, released in 2004, produced a No. 1 Christian Rock hit, “Cornerstone,” and won a Dove Award for Rock Album of the Year. It was followed by the band’s second record, Cut and Move, in 2006.
Losing All is a fusion of solid rock and Christian faith, a potent mix of amped overdrive and spiritual overtones.
