I felt out of place walking into a Bible study filled with women who were at least 30 years older than I. My first thought was to turn around and leave. But knowing that my exit would be obvious, I decided to stay.
As the group leader began reading from the first chapter of Philippians, the woman to my right gripped her pen firmly as she attempted to take notes. The woman to my left had a tremor that made it difficult for her to write. I was humbled as I contemplated the character of the women surrounding me.
These were women who had accumulated many years of wisdom to share with others, and I was honored to be among them. During the Bible reading, I saw many women nodding their heads in agreement to the truth of the words being spoken. I later discovered that many of these women were widows. Having known suffering in this life, they were women whose life experiences could fill many books.
Although their life stories differed, these women shared a common thread that challenged me on that morning. These were women of faith, whose wisdom extended well beyond their years. They had seen God’s goodness through the trials and joys they experienced in their lives.
Being a part of this Bible study is the best thing for me at this point in my life. As a young mother, I am surrounded by women who have run the race set before them, and it inspires me to live my life to the fullest for Christ.
Today I eagerly anticipate the days when our Bible study meets because it reminds me of the seasons of life. The same God who has stood by these women for so many years will carry me through all my days.
God has given me the privilege of being a part of this study group. My trust in His faithfulness is renewed every time I gather with these precious women. What I didn’t know when I signed up for the study was that this would turn out to be God’s divine appointment for me.
