In Exodus 24, God is calling Moses alone to come near to Him. Moses, the leader, the father, must go up the mountain, remain there and receive from God the instructions for Israel.
Although the seventy elders and the three high priests are with Moses, God says they must worship from a distance. It goes on to say that Moses proceeds up the mountain with the seventy elders and priests. They actually saw God and ate a meal in His presence. The seventy elders had an encounter with God, but we will see that sons have deep encounters with God.
God calls Moses to come up higher on the mountain, but the seventy elders and three priests must look on from a distance. Then, out of nowhere, it says that Joshua, Moses’ assistant and minister, climbed up higher on the mountain with Moses. Joshua was a son to Moses. Yes, he was Moses’ assistant, but first and foremost he was a son.
I can so appreciate this story. I was Leif Hetland’s personal assistant and executive administrator for several years, but first and foremost, I’ve always preferred my identity as God’s beloved daughter. It’s all about our identity, not our position. Assistant was what I did; daughter is who I am. Joshua, like myself with Leif, learned how to lean into the heart of Moses, his father. He got the principle of being fathered. A father and his faithful son attracted heaven. A father and son whose hearts are aligned toward the presence of God will attract His glory.
Timing is everything! Moses waited — he remained for six days. Seasoned fathers know the importance and value of waiting for God’s timing. At times, eager sons and daughters feel they are being hindered or slowed down by their fathers and mothers. Sons and daughters learn from Joseph, David, Esther and Jesus the necessity of waiting.
God spoke on the seventh day. The voice of God is everything. We must train ourselves to recognize His voice and how to listen intently. There are words reserved for fathers and mothers to hear because they have the capacity to carry them. There is weight in revelation.
What did this leaning into the heart of his father, Moses, offer Joshua? He was able to go into higher places of worship than the seventy elders and priests. He went to places they could not access. He went up into the glory of God with Moses. Point is — sons go to places elders and priests don’t get to go. Titles don’t make the way into the high places of God, alignment does!
Furthermore, Moses passed his mantle and assignment on to Joshua. It was Joshua who completed Moses’ assignment, leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. Alignment for the Assignment! {eoa}
