Soul ties form when we act in accordance with the flesh when developing or growing in a relationship with another person. This could be any relationship formed or grown out of shame, guilt, embarrassment, pride, loneliness, doubt and the like.

Soul ties can develop when any connection with a person is formed out of a fleshly desire to be needed, loved and accepted. In essence, it is placing a relationship or person above the relationship and person of God.

Where Do Soul Ties Come From?

As mentioned, soul ties are formed when your mind, will, and emotions are tied to or directed by anyone or anything other than the Spirit.

The Bible talks about desires that are “conceived” when temptations come.

“Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first-fruits of His creatures” (James 1:12-18).

We all struggle with temptations. We are tempted to come into agreement with:

  • Doubt
  • Fear
  • Anger
  • Pride
  • Loneliness

… just to name a few.

Many of these tempting emotions happen within relationships in some form or another. And when we come into agreement with these emotions within the boundaries of a relationship, soul ties form and block you from what God has for you. This is because the soul is making the decisions in our lives at the moment rather than our spirits—who are new and one with God.

Though they can be strong, soul ties can also be broken off. However, if we choose not to address them and break them off by the strength of the Lord and the sword of the Spirit, they can wreck our lives.

3 Dangers of Soul Ties

We know every assignment from the enemy is sent out to steal, kill, and destroy, according to John 10:10. We also know that Yeshua came to give us abundant life, and as James wrote, every good and perfect gift is from above.

So then, we have an enemy who comes to steal, and we have a loving Father who gives good and perfect gifts. To me, it seems obvious which one to be in alignment with if we want to move into new levels of faith and receive the blessings that are written for us in the books of Heaven.

1. Soul ties can wreck your health. Soul ties impact your mental, physical and spiritual health. One sign of a soul tie is dwelling on situations or people from your past, which evokes a strong emotional response. This response can be anger, pain, hurt, jealousy, insecurity or the like. These strong emotions can bounce around in the mind repeatedly, producing anxiety, fear and worry.

The Bible has a lot to say about worry and fear. Fear is from the enemy, sent to steal the peace and health God has for you. It robs you of joy, which is yours in Yeshua.

Be aware of your health. Ask the Lord if there is a soul tie that needs to be broken off if you struggle in this area.

2. Soul ties can wreck your finances. Soul ties impact your finances. One of the signs of a soul tie is a false responsibility to care for another. In other words, there might be people in your life you financially support when in actuality, you might be enabling them. As a result, your finances suffer, and they don’t learn how to move forward either. Yes, we are supposed to give to and provide for our children, family members and those in the body of Christ, but if you financially support someone who God has clearly told you not to, this is a sign of a soul tie.

Often, this financial soul tie develops because we don’t trust God’s provision or instruction to touch this person’s heart. The Bible says we can trust God to provide.

Take a moment to get honest with God if your financial support for someone feels unhealthy, especially if your support is draining your own finances. Ask Him if this is truly someone He guides you to support or if you provide out of fleshly desires.

3. Soul ties can wreck your relationships. As you can imagine, soul ties wreck relationships. If there is an unhealthy soul tie between a couple and children involved, this impacts the parent-child relationship. The Bible says we are to love the Lord first. Ask God who is ruling your heart, soul and mind. If it is someone else, take a moment to confess and repent. Then ask Him to gently guide you back to a place of alignment.

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37).

God has good plans for you, but He must remove the things that threaten those plans from being fruitful for His Kingdom. Ask Him to start revealing the soul ties in your life and get set free today!
