Tithing remains one of the most debated and disregarded practices in the modern church, and only a small fraction of Christians are honoring it biblically—and it’s costing them more than they realize.

“A recent study showed that only 5% of churchgoers biblically tithe,” Evan DiDio said during a recent livestream. “Now, that’s interesting. Maybe you don’t like the tithe. Maybe you’re against the tithe. Is the tithe biblical? Is the tithe still relevant for today?”

DiDio made clear that tithing is not about religious legalism or checking a spiritual box. “It’s not just about paying God. It’s about putting him first in everything that we do. And we’re specifically referring to finances when we talk about the tithe because that’s—you know, where your treasure is, that’s where your heart is.”

He emphasized that the principle of tithing predates the Mosaic law and is tied to honoring God, not fulfilling an obligation. “Tithing is not done away with in the new covenant from what we’ve seen because it—it was not part of the ten commandments. It wasn’t part of the law… It predated it.”

Quoting Leviticus 27, DiDio reminded listeners that the tithe belongs to God: “All the tithe is the Lord’s. The Word of God is the Word of God. And so the tithe does not belong to me. It already belongs to God.”

He warned against the common mindset of tithing as optional generosity. “Tithing isn’t optional generosity. It’s foundational obedience.”

Referencing Malachi chapter 3, DiDio read, “‘Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed me. But you say, wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and in offerings.’” He added, “It looks like the entire nation was affected by this by a lack of tithing and offering.”

DiDio’s message is not rooted in guilt, but in grace and responsibility. “Tithing is not just paying God the bill. That’s not what we’re doing here… Tithing has to be done with the right heart motive.”

He concluded with a reminder that blessings follow obedience: “And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes… And all nations shall call you blessed: for you shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.”

As more Christians wrestle with questions about financial stewardship, DiDio’s message is a firm but loving call back to what Scripture plainly teaches: the tithe belongs to God.
