Author Sarah Walton realized she’d passed her Lyme disease onto her kids, and although it wasn’t her fault, the wave of guilt hit her like a pile of bricks, she says in her book, Hope When It Hurts. Yet despite the trials and sorrow, she clung to her faith and experienced God in a way like never before.
“I wouldn’t say I was angry with God; I would say, very much like Job, I wrestled with where God was and trying to understand the character of God,” Walton says. ” … It drove me to Christ with an absolute dependence because I was so helpless myself. … With my husband, we had a lot of strain with my kids; it was very difficult. And my health was worsening. … Yet God really was faithful—He changed me profoundly.”
In the past, Walton dealt with depression, which was rooted in both the physical and spiritual realms, she explains on the Charisma News podcast on the Charisma Podcast Network. Thus, medication did play an important role in her healing in high school after she attempted suicide.
“The Lord definitely used medication. And I noticed a drastic difference—within two days, all of a sudden I could see the light of day again … and I had such an anger toward my family that just melted away,” Walton says. “My life completely flipped and went the opposite direction—where I was struggling through relationships, I suddenly desired relationships.”
