The recent stranding of an oarfish, sometimes referred to as the “doomsday fish,” has captured global attention. This deep-sea creature, rarely seen at the surface, has been linked in various cultural contexts to impending natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis. However, as believers, we turn to the Word of God to understand the deeper spiritual implications of such events. Scripture is clear that unusual occurrences in the natural world are often signs calling humanity to repentance, vigilance, and alignment with God’s will.

Signs in Nature Foretold in the Bible

The Bible frequently speaks of the earth and its creatures as part of God’s divine communication. In Luke 21:25-26, Jesus warned of signs that would precede His return: “And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.”

Here, Jesus indicates that unusual disturbances in creation—whether in the heavens or the seas—will serve as warnings of the nearing end. The stranding of an oarfish, known as a deep-sea dweller, emerging on the shores could remind us of this scripture, as it reflects the unpredictability of the natural world in turbulent times.

Marine Life as a Sign of Judgment

In Hosea 4:1-3, the prophet declared that moral decay and sin would manifest in the suffering of creation: “Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel: for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood. Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.”
