John Fullerton MacArthur Jr., a longtime pastor, author and teacher known for his verse-by-verse Bible teaching and leadership, died July 14. He was 86.
MacArthur served as senior pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, for more than five decades, beginning in 1969. His expositional teaching style, which included preaching through the entire Bible over the course of his ministry, influenced generations of pastors and church leaders.

He was also president of The Master’s Seminary and The Master’s University, institutions he helped shape into centers of theological education grounded in a high view of Scripture.
MacArthur’s teachings reached global audiences through his “Grace to You” radio and media ministry. He authored numerous books, including The MacArthur Study Bible, released in 1997, which became a widely used resource among evangelical Christians.
MacArthur is survived by his wife, Patricia, and their children and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
