John MacArthur, the 86-year-old longtime pastor of Grace Community Church, has been hospitalized with pneumonia, church officials announced Sunday.
The update came during the church’s 11 a.m. service, where associate pastor Tom Patton told the congregation, “He was admitted into the hospital and may be in the presence of the Lord soon.” MacArthur has not preached at the church this year and was absent for much of 2024 due to ongoing health concerns.

“We place our dear pastor at the feet of the glorious Savior,” Patton said, “whom he has served so faithfully for so many years and now awaits His final command to be in his presence forever.”
MacArthur celebrated 56 years as pastor-teacher at the Sun Valley-based church in February but has remained out of public view in recent months due to declining health. During the announcement, Patton asked for continued prayer for MacArthur, as well as for his wife, four children and 15grandchildren.
MacArthur gained national attention in 2020 when a California judge ruled that his church could continue holding in-person services during the pandemic, despite statewide restrictions issued by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
