President Bill Clinton had just left the White House, Hillary Clinton had just been elected a U.S. Senator, Eric Holder was a former Deputy Attorney General, and James Comey was the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
But the records from the very first Clinton Foundation investigation—released Tuesday by the FBI Records Vault—make 2001 seem just like yesterday.
But in a week when many are scratching their heads over Comey’s decision to inform Congress he was reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server, the sudden and unexpected release of the investigation notes surrounding the pardon of billionaire hedge fund manager Marc Rich was just another odd turn. The records repeatedly refer to the Public Corruption Unit, which was handling the investigation, and it’s anything but helpful to the Clinton campaign, which is still reeling from Comey’s announcement Friday following the discovering of 650,000 emails on a laptop owned by longtime Clinton aide Huma Abedin and her estranged husband, former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner. Particularly when they state the FBI was examining claims that Denise Rich’s donations to the Democratic Party “may have been intended to influence the fugitive’s pardon.”
