Speaking about how he landed the role, Diako explained, “I was a very big fan of the show since season one… I spoke to the cast and director… and suddenly, I saw the audition pop up, and I was excited and I read for the role.” He recalled the unique circumstances that led to him replacing the previous actor mid-series: “It was kind of a weird… spiritually guided situation… I was a lover of the character, so it was interesting news.”
What makes Philip such a fascinating figure for Diako is the character’s blend of playfulness, depth and spiritual seriousness. The actor highlighted how Philip’s background with John the Baptist influenced his demeanor: “Philip is very available… having had the history of his time with John the Baptist.” Diako described Philip as “kind of a lone wolf… a bit of a maverick,” who uses humor to navigate relationships, teaching Matthew “the strategies of managing group dynamics.”
Reza Diako’s journey from devoted fan to portraying Philip in The Chosen is more than an actor’s story—it’s a testimony of spiritual transformation, cultural discovery and profound connection to the biblical narrative.
