The Spiritual Side of Taylor Swift’s ‘Karma’

Taylor Swift

One of the biggest pop stars of this generation is undoubtedly Taylor Swift. She’s won multiple Grammy’s, is one of the most decorated musicians of all time and has captivated the hearts and minds of young girls for years. Her platform, and influence, have skyrocketed over the years and the Eras tour sold thousands of tickets from the beginning.

She gives credit to karma for her success.

While pop music is filled with explicit language and references, sometimes the implicit messages are the ones Christians, especially Christian parents, should be wary of.

One of Swift’s latest songs, “Karma,” uses explicit cursing, yet it is still masked by a catchy tune. However, if you look closely at the lyrics, you’ll notice she is giving credit and praise to karma as someone would to God.

In the song, Swift describes karma as her boyfriend and a god. In her music video, she depicts herself as a golden goddess, and even places herself with other women in a diabolic landscape with atrocious masks, looking strikingly similar to Sam Smith at the Grammys.

This depiction and messaging about spiritual entities and beliefs—karma, ancient gods and goddesses and the satanic realm itself, is much different than the “Love Story” or “Teardrops on My Guitar” storyline that millions of girls connected with.

This is not the first time Swift has released a music video opposed to Christian values. In 2019, her video “You Need to Calm Down” mocked Christians in light of the Equality Act which targeted free speech and pro-life efforts for the sake of gender identity and pro-choice propaganda.

At a time when country music star Jason Aldean is taking the heat for his “Try That in a Small Town,” it’s interesting to see how other content is openly embraced by the media. Demi Lovato’s latest songs and documentary, Dancing with the Devil, depicted content influenced by demonic principalities, yet she is still considered a hero by many media outlets for her proclaimed membership of the LGBTQ community.

It is important for Christians to remember that not only our eyes, but also our ears are gateways to our soul. What we listen to is what we start to believe, and it influences how we think, speak and act.

When we spend time focusing on who God is and walking with His Holy Spirit, we begin to hear something beautiful: His voice.

John 10:27 says, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

Psalm 29:4 reads, “The voice of the LORD sounds with strength; the voice of the LORD—with majesty.”

Be mindful of what you fill your soul with. Is it pleasing to the Lord? Will it bring you peace at the end of the day, or will it wire you up with anxiety and fear?

Above all, make sure to pray for those in the music industry whether they are currently Christians or not. They have influence, and their influence will either be used for good or for evil; there is no in between. {eoa}
