One sentence well writ: It is the aim of authors and writers, scribes and scholars. It is the pursuit of excellence in the desire to honor God by producing product that meets needs, enhances experience and inspires action. It’s life captured in art. When that art is expressed using words, we call that art poetry.
April is National Poetry Month, and here at Charisma, we want to be part of the game. Poetry lifts letters and words strung together into the place of beauty and wonder. It’s about doing what you do well, and as Christians, it should always be our desire to fuse excellence and aesthetics into everything we do.
Whether our vocation calls us into houses to fix drywall or into chapels to paint masterpieces, our aim should be the same: Do it all to the glory of God.
The apostle Paul succinctly stated, “Therefore, whether you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God” (1 Cor. 10:31). Eating, drinking and “whatever you do” all to the glory of God—this is our calling.
Glorifying God means we adopt a mindset like God, who first revealed Himself to us in His Word as the Creator. He is, first, the Creator God. He is “a creative.” He is an artist. He is an artisan. He refused to stop working on His creation until He could (figuratively speaking) take a few steps back, evaluate and critique his work, only to decide He was finished when He could definitively state, “This is good.”
It’s a holy call for each of us to adopt a similar mindset. We aren’t merely muddling through rituals and routines, not at all. For those of us redeemed by the blood, and filled with the Holy Ghost, we are partners with God who are continuing to “work on creation,” regardless of our vocation.
As authors and journalists, we at Charisma are taking the month of April to remind ourselves there is no higher pursuit than to glorify God in what we do. For us, it means seeking to create content—beautiful, meaningful and inspiring content—content that inspires you to encounter the power of the Holy Spirit. It means searching for the right words and giving our work “one more round” of scrutiny and editing. It’s the pursuit of beauty in what we deliver to you in the desire to reflect the revelatory, glorify the holy and inspire the aspirational. Words filled with beauty is poetry to our ears.
