The campaign is riding momentum of a significant shift in religious liberty, largely unbeknownst to many Americans. In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court, in the case of Kennedy v. Bremerton, upheld Coach Joe Kennedy’s right to pray after football games. The court’s ruling marked the end of the infamous “Lemon Test,” established in 1971’s Lemon v. Kurtzman, which led to the removal of religious symbols such as the Ten Commandments, crosses and nativities across the nation. The recent decision effectively restored the constitutional right to honor God in the public square.
While these legal developments have implications far beyond Alabama, it remains to be seen how the Alabama Supreme Court responds to the call for the reinstallation of the Ten Commandments, a crucial juncture in the ongoing discourse surrounding the intersection of religious freedom and public spaces.
