Is being a member of only one church becoming a thing of the past?
In a new study by the Hartford Institute for Religion Research, it was discovered that almost half of today’s churchgoers go to more than one church.
According to the Christian Post, the report found that since the COVID-19 pandemic, 46% of those surveyed “say they attend at least more than one congregation on a regular basis.”

Not only does this staggering number show that almost half of those who attend church are going to more than one, but it’s not just a virtual phenomenon: 22% of respondents answered that they physically go to more than one church location. Following this, 10% said that the go to another church virtually or through watching television broadcasting. Fourteen percent said they go to a secondary church both physically and by virtual outlets.
This shift in church attendance patterns may indicate a broader transformation in how believers engage with the body of Christ. Rather than being confined to a single congregation, many Christians today are seeking out multiple church communities that meet different spiritual needs—whether it be for worship style, teaching emphasis or ministry focus. This new fluidity could reflect a hunger for deeper spiritual experience and a revival-driven desire to be part of what God is doing across different expressions of the church.
These patterns might also point to a renewed unity within the global body of Christ, as denominational walls become less emphasized and shared passion for Jesus takes center stage. However, this movement-based engagement must be stewarded with wisdom and discernment, so that passion does not lead to spiritual rootlessness.
