What Makes a Leader Lose Focus

catamaran

One of the greatest threats to the long-term viability of an organization is a drifting leader.

The problem with a drifting leader is he may actually believe he is making progress. In the midst of his storm the leader’s engine roars loudly, yet the boat is only being tossed.

A key marker of drift is seen in uncertainty. The leader’s eyes may be open but his vision is short-sighted and circular. A drifting leader seeks the counsel of anyone who will help but opinions are common and usually conflicting.

The subtlety of drift rests in the presence of false reads of people, processes and even profit. Someone needs to tap the barometer to see if the needle is working.

False positives are companion travelers during a drift. This is partly attributed to the leader’s willingness to only hear a good report. The drifting leader often finds himself alone in the boat because he’s shot all the messengers.

Effective leaders celebrate bad news as a growth opportunity.

Jesus frequently warned his disciples about the danger of drifitng.

In John 15 read a powerful exhortation to “remain” in Him.

“If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love, even as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love” (John 15:10).

It seems apparent that “remaining” must be intentional.

Daily bread helps reduce daily drift.
