President Joe Biden announced over the weekend he had pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, following his conviction on federal charges earlier this year. The pardon applies to potential offenses Hunter may have committed between Jan. 1, 2014, and Dec. 1, 2024.

In his statement, President Biden said, “Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter… I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted.” He argued that Hunter had been treated differently than others facing similar charges, particularly regarding gun and tax offenses.

Biden emphasized his son’s battle with addiction, stating, “There has been an effort to break Hunter – who has been five and a half years sober… In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me – and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.”

He called the prosecution a political attack, suggesting “raw politics” had influenced the legal proceedings against Hunter. Biden expressed that this was a difficult decision, but one he hoped the American people would understand, saying, “I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision.”

Hunter Biden’s legal troubles have included felony firearm charges and a guilty plea in a tax case involving over $1 million in unpaid taxes. Despite earlier statements denying a pardon, Biden reversed course following Hunter’s conviction, which included charges of lying on a federal gun purchase form and being a drug user while in possession of a firearm.

President Biden had previously stated he would not intervene, saying, “I will abide by the jury’s decision” following Hunter’s guilty verdict in the gun case.

Hunter’s tax case also involved felony charges, and although he initially faced potential lengthy prison time, he chose to plead guilty, avoiding further family pain and privacy invasions. His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 16.
