In a surprising geopolitical development, President Donald Trump signed an executive order lifting sanctions on Syria. The move has sparked debate, with some praising it as a bold step toward peace and others warning it could reward a brutal regime.
As Mondo Gonzales pointed out in an interview with End Time Headlines, to understand the complexity behind this decision, it’s important to examine the recent shifts in Syria’s leadership and their implications for the Middle East.
Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa—known by some as “Golani”—is a Sunni militant who replaced Bashar al-Assad, a Shiite closely allied with Iran and Hezbollah. Al-Sharaa’s rise was rapid and ruthless, with reports of mass killings targeting the Alawite Shiite minority.

Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Syria is viewed as a pragmatic, if risky, maneuver aimed at reshaping Middle East dynamics. Building on his earlier success with the Abraham Accords, Trump appears eager to cement his legacy as a peacemaker. “Trump wants to be the guy that brings peace to the Middle East,” Gonzales states. By engaging directly with the new Syrian regime, Trump challenges traditional diplomacy and seems to bet on al-Sharaa’s desire for international legitimacy—and potentially peace with Israel—in exchange for economic relief.
This political chess game includes an anticipated historic meeting at the White House between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Syrian President al-Sharaa. Scheduled to coincide with the United Nations General Assembly, the summit aims to explore security agreements and steps toward normalization. Gonzales highlights the secrecy surrounding the talks but calls it “a historic meeting” that “could pave the way towards normalization between the two countries.”
This meeting could relate to biblical prophecy, in particular as Gonzales points out, for the set up of Ezekiel 38 to play out.
Concerns remain about dividing Jerusalem as part of any peace deal. Gonzales warns, “If our hands are involved in dividing Jerusalem, this is bad news,” referencing biblical warnings from Zechariah and Joel. He also points to a troubling rise in “replacement theology” and anti-Semitism within some Christian circles, which threaten Israel’s security and complicate peace efforts.
Reports indicate al-Sharaa initially demanded Israel relinquish control of the strategically important Golan Heights but soon backed off, possibly due to firm U.S. pressure. With Syria’s economy crippled by sanctions, normalization with Israel and America is crucial for al-Sharaa’s survival. Gonzales believes Trump’s negotiation skills are key.
