Taiwan, a self-governing democratic island, is claimed by China as a breakaway province. In recent years, Beijing has ramped up “grey zone tactics” including increased military drills and aerial incursions, fueling concern in the region and abroad. While the U.S. maintains its long-standing support for Taiwan, current policy is shifting toward greater collaboration with allies in the Indo-Pacific.

As reported by The Express U.S., a Financial Times article reveals the U.S. expects countries like Japan and Australia to help bear the burden of any potential conflict. “We do not seek war. Nor do we seek to dominate China itself,” an unnamed U.S. official said. “What we are doing is ensuring the United States and its allies have the military strength to underwrite diplomacy and guarantee peace.”
Japan’s Defense Ministry echoed these concerns in its annual military assessment delivered Tuesday, warning of China’s expanded operations across the Pacific and its deepening alignment with Russia. “The international society is in a new crisis era as it faces the biggest challenges since the end of World War II,” the report stated.
