Are we about to see the fall of megachurch popularity?

In a prophetic message shared on “The War Rooms Episode 19,” Emma Stark issued a clear warning to the American Church, urging a move away from transactional faith to a more authentic relationship with God.

“The Lord will not come and sit in the midst of a people who don’t know how to do authenticity and connection,” she said, emphasizing the need for genuine intimacy in worship and community. “I do believe we’re going to see megachurches start to be vacated and a whole different way of working together as the people of God if they won’t change.”

Stark’s message was clear: the church must break free from a transactional approach to faith, where God is seen simply as a provider of needs. As we see megachurch after megachurch dealing with all kinds of issues, perhaps this is the time to heed Stark’s warning.

“We’ve lost the sense of the connection with God, but we want to be able to build big church, and big structure and we want to be able to build big gathering, but we’re missing the dynamic part of encounter and relationship.”

This warning of a “mass exodus” within megachurches underscores a powerful truth: if churches fail to foster authentic relationships with God and one another, they risk losing congregants who are searching for something more than surface-level engagement. It is time for the church to move beyond religious ritual and toward a genuine heart connection with the Creator, one that fosters spiritual intimacy and lasting transformation.

For Christians today, especially those involved in larger church communities, Stark’s prophetic insights should serve as a reminder that the true church is not a building or a congregation defined by its size but a people who are united in relationship with God and one another. As we look to the future of the church, we should view this warning as an invitation to join in the reformation that will reshape the church for the glory of God and the advancement of His kingdom.
