Here are eight things God expects from husbands in order to experience His blessings in marriage.

1. Pursue God. Pursuing Jesus does not automatically designate the husband as “more spiritual.” It shows his need for God and Scripture.

2. Be a provider. Paul says, “He who does not provide for his own is worse than an unbeliever (1 Tim. 5:8). God gave Adam a job, demonstrating that provision is the husband’s responsibility.

3. Be proactive. Genesis 2:24 talks about a man taking the initiative and leaving his parents to join his wife. However, many men are passive while the wife reigns. Be proactive and ask the Lord to guide you so that you can effectively lead your family.

4. Be the pastor of your family. First Corinthians 11:3 declares that that the head of every man is Christ. The husband doesn’t need a theological degree to lead his family. You must simply love Jesus and teach your family in the ways of God.

5. Walk in purity. Men struggle with lust because of their visual nature. Job made the decision to not stare and behold women with lust (Job 31:1). Avoid talking to the opposite sex about your marital issues. Rather, invest into your marriage.

6. Be perceptive. First Peter 3:7 tells husbands to dwell with wives with understanding. Take time to understand the way God made her and learn about her dreams, fears, wants, and needs.

7. Be a protector. First Peter 3:7 mentions that the wife is the weaker vessel, indicating that the male is weak. Being the weaker vessel reveals that the wife requires greater care.

8. Be passionate. Ephesians 5:25-26, 28 instructs the husband how to love his wife. Your standard is what Jesus did for you. Learn what your wife would like you to do so that she can feel loved by you.
