In some ways the answer is simple. They were looking for a king, a ruler, a deliverer and someone who would conquer the Romans, remove their authority and replace it with a different government. While the zealots, who were a radical, political group during the first century who carried out assassinations against political figures, were trying to bring in their own government through violent means, others expected God to bring the long-promised Messiah to the throne.
Jesus would fulfill all of God’s plans but during His first coming, He would be the suffering servant and not the conqueror king. He will return soon during His Second Coming as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords who will rule forever and ever.
