Proverbs 24:3-4 We have only built one house in our lifetime, and it was interesting to watch the structure being formed day by day. First, the foundation was laid carefully. Some of the plumbing even went into the foundation area before the cement was poured on top. Then the wood frame went up, and the rooms in the house were carefully measured and framed. Finally the roof trusses were placed, and the roof was laid. Perhaps you have never built a house to live in, but we all are building spiritual houses. This Proverbs reading talks about how we should build our spiritual house: “Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.”

The house we built in Savannah will not last forever, but the spiritual house we are building will go with us into eternity. The spiritual house that will last forever is a house built through wisdom and established by knowledge. Then we can fill the rooms of this home with priceless, precious and pleasant riches—our children. We have had the privilege of not only filling our home with our own children, but we have also housed a Chinese daughter for five years and a Russian son for seven years; now we are housing another daughter and son for a season. One day when I was in the kitchen I suddenly realized how rich we are. God has filled the chambers of our home over the years with three precious natural children and has added to our riches with three more.

Some people, however, are single or are married and have no children. Can these people still fill the rooms of their spiritual home with precious and pleasant riches? The answer to this question is yes. People are God’s treasures and His inheritance. Whenever we invest in people with our time, prayers or money, we are filling the rooms of our spiritual home with God’s riches. Whenever we share the gospel with others, we are adding to those riches stored in the rooms of our spiritual home. One day we will be amazed at how the rooms in our mansions in heaven are filled with treasures—people our lives have touched.

When we retired, we thought we were through having children, and we got ready for the empty-nest time. God has never allowed us to have an empty nest, and I am grateful that He has trusted us to house some of His most priceless treasures. Is your spiritual house full of priceless riches? Each day you live you can add to those treasures in heaven by investing your own life into the lives of others.

Lord, I want to add to my treasures in heaven today.
