In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, which devastated the Houston, Texas, area; and Hurricane Irma, which slammed the Florida peninsula, we must now turn our attention and our prayers to the people of central Mexico and Puerto Rico, who all suffered a crippling natural disaster this week.
An earthquake of 7.1-magnitude rocked central Mexico Tuesday afternoon, killing 200—including 21 schoolchildren—and leveling at least 44 buildings. The students and four teachers were killed in the collapse of a primary school in the south of Mexico City. Thankfully, 11 people have been rescued, but two students and one teacher remained missing. Please pray that these students and teacher are found unharmed.
Meanwhile, at this writing, Hurricane Maria continues to thrash Puerto Rico, leaving that island 100 percent without power. According to cnn.com, the hurricane beat down on Puerto Rico with such intensity that it broke two National Weather Service radars.
Now a Category 2 hurricane, the storm is churning through the Caribbean, threatening islands already crippled by Irma. Maria left seven people dead in Dominica, where the prime minister reported “widespread devastation.”
Maria was expected to dump 12 to 18 inches of rain on Puerto Rico. Thankfully, the storm is projected to miss the U.S. mainland.
