Recently on Live Your Best Life With Liz Wright, Liz has an incredible conversation with Eric Gilmour of Sonship International. There is a gift of language on Eric’s life to communicate intimacy with God and how to live in utter devotion to Him.
Eric shared that “Devotion is far less a discipline as it is a delight” and that “devotion is being captivated by all He is and who He is.” When people ask Eric, “What’s missing in Christianity?” he says it’s often the sweet exchange of direct, loving contact with God. He cautions us that “the danger of the intimacy movement is that people have only adopted the language” without going behind closed doors themselves.
Both Liz and Eric have felt an emphasis on drawing into Jesus in this time to live totally dependent, leaning on Him. For Eric, a key to living in dependency on God is bankruptcy—the recognition that he is needy before the Lord. He says, “A lot of people sabotage their prayer lives by going in, trying to make something happen, not realizing there’s nothing you can do.” Eric sees the humility of bankruptcy as a secret door into His presence. Eric clarifies he doesn’t mean a groveling kind of humility, but a genuine recognition that we are in need of Him.
The practice of adoration is a key how-to of Eric’s, to experience the presence of God not only in times alone, but throughout the day. He shares that “once the soul gets its eyes off itself and looks unto the Lord, there seems to be an opening up of perceptibility” of the presence of Jesus.
