Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14 (KJV), “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
This verse reveals that God desires “life” for us (victory, peace, joy, prosperity) and has set a path for us to achieve this life. Sadly, many—instead of pursuing the “narrow” way to peace—take the “broad” road that leads to heartache and loss. This path may include substance abuse, anger, promiscuity, violence or a number of other vices. The good news is that God is able to pick us up from the broad path and place us back on the narrow path that leads to life.
Our crossing over from the road of life, the narrow road, to enter the straight gate to life from the broad road often begins with two simple actions. First must come the prayer of repentance. We have to be real with God that we have made bad decisions and taken a detour from His plans and purposes.
Second comes the prayer of commitment. Jesus prayed this prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane: “Nevertheless not my will, but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42b, MEV). He committed his life to the Father although the path set ahead seemed challenging. Jesus chose the narrow road but gained victory.
A powerful thing that happens with the prayer of commitment is that a huge burden and weight are lifted off your heart. Jesus says in Matthew 11:30, “For My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” When we repent from the heart and sincerely pray the prayer of commitment, we can now walk on the straight and narrow path with a new ease and victory!
