Donald Trump’s Meeting With Mexican President Demonstrates He Is ‘Presidential’

Donald Trump and Mexican President

An impromptu meeting between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto didn’t go anything like most Americans probably expected.

They discussed a number of issues, including Trump’s plan for a border wall between the countries. Reportedly, they did not, however, discuss the New York City businessman’s assertion that Mexico would pay for the wall.

And, when they emerged from their meeting an hour later to take questions from the press, even Trump’s toughest critics were forced to admit he seemed presidential. Here are some of the media’s comments about the visit:

The Washington Examiner ran the headline “Mexico Gamble A Huge Win For Trump”

The Washington Post’s Jenna Johnson wrote, “Trump often says business taught him to work with anyone—even people he doesn’t agree with or like. He demonstrated that in Mexico today.”

NBC News’ Kelly O’Donnell tweeted, “[Donald Trump] going for a world stage moment in Mexico.”

The Washington Examiner’s Byron York tweeted, “President, candidate stood side by side, translators translating, assembled press, background that looked like UN.”

Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro then tweeted, “Big win for Trump. Surprising that Pena Nieto handed it to him, given how unpopular Trump is in Mexico.”

Trump campaign deputy communications director Bryan Lanza said the meeting was “an impressive display of his ability to serve as our nation’s president on day one” and demonstrated his commitment to strengthening the U.S. economy, as well as its relationship with Mexico. His running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, also gave the meeting a big thumbs up.

“What the American people are seeing today is the kind of decisive president Donald J. Trump will be,” he said. “This meeting begins a relationship where we can talk about the issues we’ve got to resolve between the United States and Mexico, as well as the issues we have in common.”
